This is the true story of the death by hanging of 25-year-old Scottish outlaw Jamie MacPherson in 1700. Jamie was born in 1675, the illegitimate son of a Highland laird and a beautiful gypsy girl. He became a man of great physical strength, an expert swordsman, as well as a renowned fiddler. But his career was robbery-his band led by a piper invading the markets. At his final armed robbery, a w...

This song originally hails from a 12th century Latin song "Orientis Partibus" which first appeared in France and is usually attributed to Pierre de Corbeil, Bishop of Sens (d 1222) ("Office de la circoncision," "Lew manuscrit de l’office de la Circoncision de Notre-Dame-du-Puy," or "L’Office de Pierre de Corbeil," circa 1210). The Feast of the Circumcision is celebrated on January 1. The song i...

Sequel to ' Grandfather's Clock-Henry Work-1878-Performed by Tom Roush

Henry Work wrote this song two years after he penned the still popular 'Grandfather's Clock.'(ua-cam.com/video/su7IECXoKLg/v-deo.html) New buyers of the old house decided to replace the original grandfather's clock with a newer clock that hung on the wall, Though this song never reached the same popularity, I decided to arrange and record it for the sake of American music history. This song can...

The original name for this folksong was 'Skewball.' It became popular in America as 'Stewball.' I've played this song for 35 years and now decided to record it. There have been many verses added and changed since it found it's way across the Atlantic from England. I recorded this in July of 2019.

This is one of the few songs that was written about the Mexican-American War that was fought between 1846 and 1848. In the days of the California gold rush, one of the most popular ways for folks on the east coast to get there was to take a ship south to the horn of South America and then sail north to San Francisco. The trip took between 6 to 8 months and cost between $600 and $1200. This is a sailor's story.
"Darling Nelly Gray" - 1856 - Performed by Tom Roush

"Darling Nelly Gray" is a 19th-century popular song that was written and composed by Benjamin Hanby. It is written as from the point of view of an African-American male slave in Kentucky whose sweetheart has been taken away by slave-owners. The man mourns his beloved, who has been sold South to Georgia (where the slave’s life was conventionally regarded as harsher). He eventually dies and joins...

The rhymes and rhythm of this sequel have that timeless and beautiful quality of the original, and though I loved the original's grieving yet positive tone and mood, I also find the more frustrated and sour expression of this one to be an interesting follow up. I can appreciate how it balances the feeling of someone's passing being disrespected and the bitterness of others misunderstanding the meaning of things they're not attached to, with the honest and nuanced conclusion of making peace with what can't be corrected. I could imagine the ending being the man getting rid of the wall-mounted clock too, and potentially also just getting another tall-case one, if it were in the hands of another writer, but I'm happy it didn't end that way. Though, I am aware that this song was purely fictional despite the original's origins as a true story, about a clock that is still around to this day. I find it more comforting that this isn't true-- as obviously this isn't a very happy ending-- but it still has artistic merit in itself as an alternate-history of sorts, and also the theme that can be inferred about special belongings and respect towards those who have passed away. Now I'm just wondering what an English version would sound with the additional lyrics that one of the Czech arrangements brought. I heard about that on the Wikipedia article I found this sequel through, it sounds interesting.

I cant get this song out of my head. I knew it when the few people who cared about me were still alive before they all passed and I know where the legend comes from as well. The head of the house was the only person only allowed to wind the clock in the 19th century. When they died that wad it. The clock stopped. Like life. 😔

I was barely familiar with only the chorus and not all of it, this is the first time I've heard the whole thing. I seem to recall hearing it in a cartoon or something as a child in the 60s, clearly a largely forgotten piece of musical history. So nice to find us here, just by wild happenstance I happen to think of it and here it is!

Fun fact: the original composer of the song was a staunch supporter of the union, and wish she had never written it upon hearing of its use by the Confederacy. "If I had known to what youth they would put my song, I will be damned to have ever written it" - Daniel Emmett

Love the song, good version. However, the Shenandoah in the song references the Oneida chief, and the Missouri River. I had heard this previously, and it causes the song to make sense (white man wants to marry Indian maiden). It is not about the Shenandoah River in VA/WV. I learned this recently when I googled the man Shenandoah and got nothing but when I googled the song and got into the Wikipedia page, the chief showed up, with the folk history of the song and a link to the chief.
